Dwight D. Eisenhower was the 34th President of the United States of America. He served two terms as President. He ran on the republican ballot against Democrat Adlai Stevenson of Illinois. Eisenhower chose then 39 year old Senator Richard Nixon to run as his vice president Eisenhower was adorned by the American people for his triumphs during the great World Wars.
On the campaign trial he kept his slogan short sweet and to the point "I like Ike". During his campaign his running mate Richard Nixon, had been accused of using Presidential Campaign funds for his own personal use. Nixon confronted these allegations head on with a speech that is today known the "Checkers Speech". Checkers was a gift the Nixon's daughter, Nixon in his speech, denied all of the allegations that were brought up against him, but he vowed to not let anything happen to his daughter's beloved dog Checkers. In response to Nixon speech, there was an outpouring of support for Eisenhower and Nixon's campaign. On election day after the ballots were counted, Eisenhower and Nixon had won with 55 percent of the popular vote and a landslide in the electoral college, with 442 votes to Stevenson's 89.
During Eisenhower's presidency he had constructed an armistice that brought peace to South Korea's border. Within the same year, Eisenhower made his famous "Atoms for Peace" speech at the United Nations because both the United States and Russia had both recently made atomic bomb. In his speech he gave ways that the two countries could use atomic energy for peaceful uses.
He was reelected in 1956 for a second term as President of the United States along with Richard Nixon as his Vice President again. In his second term he faced crises in Suez and Lebanon. Other great accomplishments during his two terms include creating the U.S. Information Agency. He also played the key role in establishing Alaska and Hawaii as states within this time. He was fundamental in supporting the creation of the Interstate Highway System. Another great thing that he did while in office was signing the 1957 Civil Rights Act and setting up a permanent Civil Rights Commission. Eisenhower was also responsible for signing the bill for the formation of the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA).
